Formula milk

Some mothers may not be able to breastfeed, or may choose not to. In these cases, as cows' milk should not be given to babies under 12 months, formula milk (usually based on cows' milk) is the alternative to breast milk. Formula milks can come as a powder to be made up with water (advise parents to check the packaging instructions), or as ready-to-drink cartons and bottles. Remember, any parent considering switching from breastfeeding to formula milk should first consult a midwife, healthcare visitor or GP. Note: only pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are able to advise on first infant formula milk.
There are different types of formula milks. Specialist milks* should only be used on the advice of a healthcare professional. Formula milks include:
- First infant formula - can be used from birth
- Follow-on formula - for babies over six months
- Growing up/toddler milk - from one year of age
- Comfort formula - contains partially hydrolysed cows' milk proteins, which may make the formula easier to digest
- Anti-reflux formula* - thickened formula that may help reflux
- Lactose-free formula* - for babies who are lactose intolerant.
