Child health experts agree that the care given to a child during the first 1,000 days of life has the most significant impact on a child's development. This is from the start of pregnancy to a child's second birthday.1

Breast milk is a great source of nutrition for babies. Colostrum is the milk that is produced in the early days, which contains antibodies, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Mature milk is produced after a few days, and is thinner and paler. It provides the correct balance of nutrients for the baby.

The Department of Health recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a baby's life. Around 70% of UK mothers start breastfeeding initially.2 The health benefits for breastfed babies can include a lower risk of sudden infant death syndrome and obesity.

You can give personalised additional advice by reminding mums who are breastfeeding to drink plenty of water and eat a healthy, balanced and varied diet.
